A soldier in Hong Kong, tea and a few decades…

James Green, Proprietor and founder of Tea from the Manor is off to the Hong Kong International Tea Fair on the 11-13th of August. His visit marks the 41st anniversary of his last trip to Hong Kong made under rather different circumstances.

James was last in Hong Kong at the age of 17 on his first overseas posting with the Royal Horse Artillery during its tour of duty in 1973-75. Before the handover to China in 1997, the British government had a political commitment to safeguard the territory against external and internal threats. So there stood James with the safety of much of the Sino-Hong Kong border in his hands!

Tea is central to a life of soldiering in good times and times of conflict. After spending many more years on active service in Northern Ireland and Cyprus, the interest in tea stayed with James in “Civvy Street” and became a passion that sparked the founding of Tea from the Manor.

On this return visit to Hong Kong, his son Harry, who, by coincidence, will be seventeen when making the trip, will accompany James. Harry is studying Film & Photography at Sir John Deane's College in Cheshire and will be documenting the trip.

At the exhibition James & Harry will be meeting plantation owners and producers that supply Tea from the Manor. They will also get the chance to visit some of the 230 exhibitors from 12 countries and regions, including major tea production centres such as the provinces of the Chinese mainland, India, Japan and Sri Lanka.  It’s most definitely a buying trip and James is hoping to add more of the finest teas to his list.

Today, Tea from the Manor brings the finest full leaf teas from the best tea gardens around the world to delight the palates of its customers. Tea from the manor now has customers that range from the 5 star Chester Grosvenor Hotel, Tatton Park and Bents Garden Centres to tearooms, restaurants and bars throughout the country.  

Tea from the Manor provides a concept that is a perfect fit for both retail sales of bagged teas and enhancing the restaurant and tearoom experience. Teas are available loose and in silky bags. A core range of teas such as Earl Grey, Darjeeling Leaf and English Breakfast is enhanced to over 60 teas with green teas, fruit teas and special blends for seasonal events. 

Tea from the Manor works with its clients to help them develop their tea experience and grow revenues as a result – anyone serious about their hospitality must have a great tea offering and Tea from the Manor is perfectly placed to provide a truly fine tea package!
