The goodness of green - the healthy brew

29th December 2014

January is upon us once again and as usual after a period of gluttony we seek healthy choices and resolve to live cleanly for the coming months. One simple way to stay on track is to drink green tea - many of the health benefits are well known, but if you've not converted to the goodness of green here are a few reasons to give it a go.

  • Green tea has been used as a medicine for centuries in China and around Asia. It is used to lower blood pressure, prevent cancer and maintain a healthy weight. It is thought to help to regulate blood sugar levels, reduce cholesterol and even protect your teeth from decay.
  • Green tea is processed in a way that maintains antioxidants that are normally removed when making black tea. These antioxidants are thought to help fight off illness and reduces the effects of aging.
  • It’s also great for helping you to relax and focus your mind as drinking green tea boosts concentration thanks to amino acid L-Theanine.
  • Green tea does contain caffeine - so be careful if you're sensitive. It can vary by tea type but there is generally less caffeine than in a cup of coffee but enough to give you a bit of a boost.

Green tea types

Tea from the Manor has a delicious range of loose leaf green teas. Choose from the tightly rolled leaves of Gunpowder, the smoothness of Chun Mee of the delicately sweet Dragon Well. For those after a refreshing drink try our Moroccan Mint - mint leaves are blended with green tea creating a perfect digestif. For ease we have a fragrant and delicate green tea available in silky teabags - something for everyone!

Brewing tips

Green tea shouldn't be brewed for too long - anything much longer than 2 -3 minutes will leave you with a bitter aftertaste. For the best taste brew for 1 to 2 minutes for small leaved teas, you may wish to leave it a little longer for larger leaves. Use about 1 teaspoon or 1 silky teabag per person and use freshly boiled water that has been left to cool slightly.

Add fresh lemon or ginger to add additional flavour and health benefits.
